Postpartum Care: Support for Your Recovery

Postpartum care should start with how you are recovering, not with a fixed treatment schedule. Birth, feeding, sleep and any complications all affect what feels manageable. At Ounruean Clinic, traditional postpartum care is considered after an individual assessment.

The clinic’s Thai guide describes massage, herbal compresses and selected warming practices within traditional postpartum care, sometimes called yu fai. These are options to discuss with the practitioner, rather than a package that is suitable for everyone. Your recovery and medical advice come first.

When can you begin?

There is no single starting day that is safe for every mother or every procedure. Tell the clinic how you gave birth, whether you have stitches or a surgical wound, and whether there were complications. Check with your maternity clinician before heat, abdominal work or massage after a caesarean birth or a difficult recovery.

If feeding hurts, your breast is red or swollen, or you feel feverish or unwell, seek advice from your maternity team or a qualified breastfeeding professional. A traditional treatment should not delay assessment of a feeding problem or suspected infection.

Know when to seek urgent help

Chest pain or difficulty breathing after birth needs urgent medical attention. The NHS guide to your body after birth explains recovery changes and warning signs. Ask your maternity team whenever you are worried about recovery.

Before booking, tell us what support you need and what your treating clinician has advised. We can discuss which services may be appropriate and what should wait.
